Many business owners ask us, "How much does the WhatsApp Business API cost?" The answer has two parts: the charge Meta (WhatsApp's company) takes for each message, and the fee your WhatsApp API provider charges for the panel, setup and support. This guide explains both in simple words.
How WhatsApp API pricing works
Since 1 July 2025, Meta charges per delivered message. The price depends on the type (category) of message you send. Messages that are not delivered are not charged.
- Marketing: offers, festival greetings, new products, reminders to come back.
- Utility: updates about something the customer already did, like order, payment, fee or appointment alerts.
- Authentication: OTPs for login and verification.
- Service: your normal replies when a customer messages you first.
Meta's WhatsApp rates in India
| Message type | Meta's rate per message | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing | ₹0.8631 | "Diwali sale, 20% off this week" |
| Utility | ₹0.1150 | "Your fee of ₹5,000 is due on 10th" |
| Authentication (OTP) | ₹0.1150 | "4821 is your login OTP" |
| Service | ₹0.1150 after the first 1,000 free each month | Replying to a customer's question |
These are Meta's India rates from the 1 October 2026 rate card. They do not include 18% GST or your provider's fee. Meta can change rates, so always check the latest prices before you plan a big campaign.
What is free?
- Messages customers send to you are always free.
- The first 1,000 service replies every month, for each business phone number.
- Messages after an ad click. When a customer messages you from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad or your Facebook Page button, your messages in the next 72 hours are free.
- Undelivered messages are not charged.
What changed on 1 October 2026
1. Service replies are no longer fully free. Each business number gets 1,000 free service replies a month. After that, each reply costs ₹0.1150.
2. Utility messages are now always charged. Earlier, utility messages sent inside the 24-hour chat window were free. Now they cost ₹0.1150 every time.
Simple cost examples
A school sends 2,000 fee reminders (utility):
2,000 × ₹0.1150 = ₹230 + 18% GST = ₹271.40
A shop sends 1,000 festival offers (marketing):
1,000 × ₹0.8631 = ₹863.10 + 18% GST = ₹1,018.46
As you can see, the message type matters a lot. A marketing message costs about 7.5 times more than a utility message.
Other costs to plan for
- Provider (panel) fee: for the dashboard to send bulk messages, see reports and manage chats.
- Setup and Meta verification: help with your WhatsApp Business Account, display name and business verification.
- Chatbot or API connection: if you want auto-replies or messages from your website, software or ERP.
5 tips to save money
- Choose the right template type. Send fee, order and appointment alerts as utility, not marketing. Meta can change the category if the message looks like an offer.
- Send only to customers who agreed to get your messages. It lowers blocks and wasted messages.
- Clean your number list before every campaign, removing wrong and repeated numbers.
- Use Click-to-WhatsApp ads. Your messages in the next 72 hours are free.
- Use Bulk SMS as a backup for customers without WhatsApp.
